Major General Lindsay Merritt Inglis CB, CBE, DSO & Bar, MC, ED (16 May 1894 – 17 March 1966) was a New Zealand military leader, lawyer and magistrate. He served on the Western Front during the First World War with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He returned to New Zealand in 1919 and was a solicitor and barrister in Timaru. He volunteered for service during the Second World War, and commanded the 4th Infantry Brigade in the campaigns in Crete and North Africa. He had two periods in command of the 2nd New Zealand Division. After the war he was appointed to a military court of the Allied Control Commission, which administered occupied Germany. He later served as chief judge of the Allied Control Commission's supreme court from 1947 to 1950. ==Early life== Inglis was born in Mosgiel, Otago, New Zealand on 16 May 1894 to a banker and his wife. After completing his education at Waitaki Boys' High School in Oamaru, he commenced legal studies at the University of Otago in 1913.
